We are still 3 weeks away from Super Bowl 2010, yet the soap opera that is the NFL is always brewing with drama. Lets take a look at some of the coaching changes in the NFL since the regular season ended.
1. Mike Shanahan- Washington Redskins
The Jim Zorn era has finally ended in the nation’s capital and boy was it brutal. Shanahan took this season off to recharge his batteries after quite the lengthy and very succesful stay in Denver. Questions remain in D.C., Is Jason Campbell the QB of the present and future for the Skins? Can Clinton Portis remain healthy? and regain the magic he had under Shanny while a Bronco. Fixing an overrated secondary, Deangelo Hall can stay.
2. Pete Carroll- Seattle Seahawks
Paul Allen has money……Bye Bye Jim Mora Jr……Hello USC…….Pete Carroll returns to the NFL and will be cashing a big yearly paycheck ( 7mill) to try and help the Seahawks get back to the top. Since their Super Bowl appearance in 2005, the Hawks did win two division titles, but the last two years have been dreadful. Sure the losses of Shaun Alexander and Walter Jones are big factors, Hasselbeck’s injury issues and on and on. Carroll’s biggest issues to start…..How much control does he have with player personel decisions, remember the Hawks didnt get to the Super Bowl until after then HC/GM Mike Holmgren gave up GM duties. Jeremy Bates and Ken Norton are leaving So Cal and joining the coaching staff…..Justin Forsett impressed late in the season, Nate Burleson was having an all-pro season until he caught the injury bug. TJ Housch needs to bounce back from a disappointing season, Curry Wilson and Trufant lead a very exciting and capable defense. Can Pete be the difference in this underachieving team….I think he can!
3. Chan Gailey- Buffalo Bills
How bad has it gotten for the Bills? The hiring of Gailey tells me this……NO ONE WANTED THIS JOB!!! Cmon Buddy Nix (Bills GM) who are you lying to……30 to 40 interested applicants, how many were top qualified applicants. You compared yourselves to the Oakland Raiders, that was your big punchline you idiot. Tell the truth, nobody wants this job thats worth a damn…Nobody wants to work for Ralph Wilson or Buddy Nix. Let’s look at Mr Gailey…..decent off coord, mediocre head coach. Couldnt cut it in Dallas 16-14 record, went the college route to Georgia Tech 44-32 overall but nothing spectacular…no BCS bowl bids 1 season over 7 wins and never beat rival Georgia. Got bounced by Todd Haley in Kansas City before the season even began. And the worst part for Chan, the team he inherits is garbage. Fred Jackson is the lone bright spot in the 2009 season for Bills fans, other than that questions remain at the following positions….QB, WR, OL, rush defense.
